NerdWallet Looking for Participants in Paid Small Business Study

May 29th, 2012

Focus Group Needed for NerdWallet’s Online Discount Tool

NerdWallet is looking for creative business owners to test drive and analyze a new online discount tool that we’re developing. This discount tool is meant to help smaller, local, and independent retailers like yourselves boost their online presence and advertise their online stores for free. We would like to gather feedback on how to make it better and more useful to store owners like you!  In order to participate, you will need a blog or e-commerce site outside of your Etsy store.

Compensation:
We will pay each participant $30 per test, plus an extra $5 if you bring your own laptop.  We will also provide snacks, pizza, and drinks!

Duration of Time Commitment:
Each test will be around 30 minutes long, and they will take place in person, in our office in SOMA.  We will schedule appointments with interested participants in advance.

What is NerdWallet?
NerdWallet is the web’s best source of information to help consumers make educated comparisons and save money on everything from credit cards, to gas, to everyday online purchases. Our tools have been featured in publications like Money Magazine, the New York Times, and Lifehacker, and our site is often recommended by consumer advocates. Over the past few years, our consumers-first approach and our emphasis on local, independent, or non-profit organizations has allowed us to help millions of consumers and business owners save money.

Why NerdWallet?

  • More than 10,000 unique visitors, every day
  • Featured in major media like the New York Times and ABC News
  • Free advertising helps drive traffic to your store
  • You have complete control over what our users see

Why coupons?
NerdWallet’s coupon tool serves two purposes:

1)   Helping consumers find deals at stores they shop at every day.

2)   Helping smaller independent online retailers to promote their products at the same level playing field as the big box stores.

There are millions of people searching for coupons and discounts on the web, so by allowing retailers to post their own coupons for free, we can give these consumers a chance to find better alternatives to the retailing giants, and give smaller stores more qualified customers. It’s a win-win!

Who to Contact:
For more information and to volunteer as a participant, please contact Rita Chu at rita@nerdwallet.com with your name and e-commerce website URL

For the gaming geeks, there is Pixel Party

May 17th, 2012

I’m Shampton. I’ve been pushing pixels since I was 7. From playing with print shop on the Apple ii at Whitman Elementary in Chicago to playing Pac Man in the arcade and Jumpman on the Commodore 64 to making websites as an “adult”, I see the world through pixellated glasses. My “current” favorite game is Katamari Damacy. This love of pixels is why I make jewelry, tshirts and art inspired by old school videogames.

My father was a mechanic and grandfather was a carpenter so I’ve always tinkered with things. I had a lego addiction in my twenties that I needed to shake. Make magazine started, my wife was making things with shrinky dinks and I started to get ideas. There was also a broken Ikea dresser that I just couldn’t let go of. I didn’t know why. I eventually realized I was saving it so I could free the pixels from it. It became my first piece of pixellated art.

I love making people smile with the things I make. At shows, I watch people as they approach my booth and their eyes twinkle as they recognize something. Its awesome. The worst thing is that I can’t make every game. I’d like for everyone to have that feeling when they’re in my booth but I only have so much space.

What I make now is just the beginning. I’m thrilled to be at Maker Faire this year. Make helped me along this path and hopefully being here this weekend will inspire me to bring my pixels to the next level.

Cookoorikoo, grandma's jewelry box redux

May 17th, 2012

My name is Shanalee Hampton. I make jewelry and hair accessories with silk and cotton yoyos and vintage repurposed items. I love when people tell me that the things I make remind them of sorting through their grandma’s jewelry box.

I started Cookoorikoo after being inspired by a photo in a Japanese Craft magazine of a gallery exhibition featuring yoyos. I’d learned how to make them when I was very young and hadn’t thought of them much since. After looking at those pictures, I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I started incorporating vintage jewelry when I realized I could constantly sort through old jewelry, just like when I was younger.

I’m inspired by vintage hats and jewelry, colors, flowers and well, yoyos. I’m currently working on a line of one of a kind hats. I want to make items that make woman feel pretty and maybe a little whimsical. I want to make it easy to be fancy every day.

The best thing about what I do? I love it when I have an idea that seems kind of crazy so I let it bounce around in my head for a bit. When I finally sit down to make it and it works, I’ve been known to squeal and clap. The worst? When that item sits unloved in my shop. Everything eventually finds the woman or girl its meant to be with but sometimes it takes a little longer than I’d like.

Vendors needed for Napa Artisan Fair – June 24th

May 13th, 2012

The organizer of a Chic-y Artisan Craft Fair event in Napa is seeking out vendors!  Do you make anything crafty, sell a unique product, are an artist of all sorts, sew, make toys, have vintage goods, repurpose furniture, have an edible goodie company, natural goods, eco friendly products, have a service you want to advertise or anything else cool, fun and unique??? If so, this is the craft fair for you!

This event will take place on June 24th 2012.

Advertising is by word of mouth and on facebook so I strongly urge each vendor to advertise too. I will be making an event invite on Facebook, advertising like crazy via facebook and will be handing out fliers.

The cost of the booth depends on the number of vendors. The more vendors, the less the booth cost. I’m hoping each booth will cost no more than $55/vendor but I can’t say exactly until I get more vendors. It’s possible the price will be as much as $100 max for a booth.

Each booth comes with tables and table linens. I am not charging vendors any fees for setting up this event nor will I take a % of your sales. You get to keep all of your earnings. I’m providing this so that small businesses, artists and crafters will have an opportunity to have a booth at an affordable rate. I too will have a booth for my products. : )

I am taking reservations for a $40 down payment. That will guarantee you a booth and be applied towards the total cost of your booth rental. I hope to be refunding part of that $40 to you, as a result of getting a lot of vendors but that cannot be determined now nor guaranteed.

The venue has a variety of table shapes and sizes, the only way I can make it fair is by having a first come first serve policy. Your choice of table size will be determined by the order of which you have reserved and paid the $40 reservation hold fee. I do hope that someone who doesn’t need a large table would forgo it for a smaller one. As I said, I am doing this for our community of small businesses, artists and crafters, not for personal profit on booth sales so please keep that in mind.

I hope to hear from you crafty artists and small business owners, so we can make this event amazing!!!

Folia Design, laser art with an urban flair

May 13th, 2012

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your business. What inspired you to go into the craft business? I live and work in San Francisco, a city that inspires and delights me every day. I started experimenting with laser cut design about a year ago and quickly fell in love with the hands on, intricate results one can achieve working with the laser. Discovering the laser cutter was a wonderful way to take the design skills I had from my background in landscape architecture and urban design and apply them in an entirely new context. What I love about being in the craft business is not just being able to spend my time creating unique, beautiful items (which is indeed a wonderful privilege), but also hearing stories from people who buy my work and learning about the personal connection they feel to the pieces I have made.

Describe your creative process when designing/making your product line. I find inspiration in the every day natural and urban forms around me and translate this inspiration into the organic and modern geometries found in my designs. My work also reflects an artistic interest in the exploration of geometry and the playful repetition of shapes.

All pieces for Folia Design SF are digitally drafted, laser cut at Tech Shop, a member based workshop in San Francisco, and then hand assembled. I use a combination of laser etching (surface burning) and laser cutting (burning through) materials that have been carefully selected for their strength, durability, and etching qualities. In addition, Folia Design SF strives to be environmentally responsible and uses renewable and recycled materials whenever possible.

What’s the best thing about what you do? And the worst?
I love watching my designs come to life with the laser cutter and then seeing those pieces become part of someone else’s life through use or wear. I am also excited to be able to contribute to San Francisco’s creative economy and provide an alternative avenue for people who want to support local artists and makers. I don’t think I’ll ever strike it rich doing this, but it certainly enriches my life in many other ways.

booking designers for Chillin 14th anniversary June 23, 2012‏

May 11th, 2012

Hello there, I hope this email finds you well.  This is Irene from Chillin’ Productions and Wonderland SF. The reason I am writing is because I am booking designers for our Chillin’ 14th Anniversary show at Mezzanine Saturday June 23, 2012. This show will feature: 80 fashion designers, 200 painters and photographers, 2 live painters, video installations and a bunch of great DJ’s.Show is from 8:00pm-2:00am

This is a very special show to me because is our 14th anniversary and the fact that we have been able to support artists and designers for so long.

This shows we only do twice per year (anniversary & December Holidays show) . We normally have an attendance of at least 2000 people. Our shows have been free for designers to vend for 14 years and my goal is not only for designers to make money but also get exposure in the press and make connections with boutiques and buyers in the Bay Area. My goal is to support the local art and fashion community here and keep SF a unique place.

I do not charge designers to vend but I do have some expectations and if those do not work for you we are not the show for you. I work really hard for the designers and I do the best I can but your help make a huge difference!

I do not charge ANY fee for you to do the show but I expect the following from you:

In order for you to do the show this is what I truly expect from you:
1. If you are doing another show that same day you can NOT do my show.
2. I expect ALL designers to get flyers from me
3. expect designers to post the event in their websites.
4. send an email blast about the show
5. post to facebook, myspace, yelp, going, etc.,
6. If you have stuff at Wonderland SF you can not be pulling out inventory from the store.
7. If you cancel with less 2 weeks notice you will be charged a penalty fee (regardless the excuse)

If you are Not willing to do this this is not the show for you.

Anyway, I am so excited about this show! If you are interested in the show email me fast as at times I get booked in less than an hour.

This is a very special show because it marks our 14th anniversary and we opened last may our boutique and Gallery and being able to keep supporting local on the daily basis

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
