The sidewalks in North Berkeley are the target of artists young and old, professional and greenhorn during the CHOCOLATE & CHALK ART FESTIVAL. Prizes for artists. Chocolate Sampling takes place in the local restaurants. Special children’s area includes inflatables and pony rides. Admission free.

Of course there’s fireworks at dusk off the end of the Berkeley Pier but there’s a whole lot more including music stages, crafts, massages, free dragon boat rides, a preview of the Kite Festival and the United States Navy Concert Band. This is an alcohol-free, family-friendly event. Admission free. Parking $15.

Celebrating the time of year when the veil between the living and the dead is most diaphanous, a community altar, or ofrenda is created by attendees. Hands-on art projects, free skull facepainting, fire dancers, food trucks, a beer & wine garden, and a candle light procession along the sidewalks of the Gourmet Ghetto led by Aztec dancers and drummers create a secular rite for the community. Admission free.

Bring your boots and mittens to play in the snow that is predicted to gently fall in the Gourmet Ghetto. Visit with the Snow Queen, live pony rides, make holiday crafts for kids, and warm up with hot cider and chewy cookies. Find one-of-a-kind holiday gifts from local craft vendors. This is a free event for children of all ages.
